A merchant cash advance is not a loan: it is the purchase of a portion of a business's future receivables, collected as a percentage of sales or by fixed debits until the purchased amount is remitted. Truevale Loans, a small-business funding broker in Reading, Pennsylvania, helps Berks County owners understand holdbacks, factor pricing and stacking before comparing an advance with loan options.

A purchase of receipts, not a loan
A merchant cash advance is not a loan. In an advance, the funder buys a specified amount of the business's future card sales or deposits at a discount and pays for them up front. The business then remits the purchased amount from its sales until it has all been delivered. There is no interest rate in the loan sense; the cost is the difference between what the funder paid and what it collects.
What is a holdback percentage?
The holdback is the share of each day's card sales or deposits the funder collects, set in the agreement. With a percentage holdback, a slow day sends less to the funder and a busy day more, so the time to finish varies with sales. Some agreements instead set a fixed daily or weekly debit, with a reconciliation clause that lets the business request an adjustment if sales fall. That clause only helps if you read it, keep records and use it.
To see how the factor, the holdback and your average daily sales interact, try the MCA payback and days estimator. It shows total payback, the cost of the advance and an estimate of the number of sales days to finish remitting.
How the price is expressed
An advance's price is expressed as a factor. Multiply the advance by the factor and you get the total the funder will collect. Because collection may finish in months rather than years, the same factor can mean a very different annualized cost depending on how fast the business sells. When comparing an advance with a working capital loan, compare the total dollars each will cost over the period you expect, and ask the funder for any fees deducted from the advance itself.
What is loan stacking?
Stacking means taking a second advance, or a loan, on top of an existing one before the first is finished. Each funder collects its own share of sales, so two or three holdbacks can absorb much of a business's daily cash. Many advance agreements prohibit additional financing against the same receivables without consent. If an offer arrives while an advance is still being remitted, read the existing agreement first.
Will a merchant cash advance show up on business credit reports?
Practices vary by funder. Some report nothing to business credit bureaus while the advance is in good standing; some do; and nearly all review credit when you apply. A UCC financing statement filed by the funder is a public record that other lenders can find. You can check what has been filed against your business with a Pennsylvania UCC search. Ask each funder directly what it reports and when.
What happens if you default on a merchant cash advance agreement?
Default terms are set in each agreement and can include acceleration of the remaining purchased amount, enforcement of a personal guarantee and collection against assets named in the UCC filing. Read the default and guarantee sections before signing, and consider having an attorney review them.
Who tends to consider an advance in Berks County, PA
Funders usually pitch advances to businesses with steady card volume: restaurants, shops, salons and service businesses. Berks County had 729 food service and drinking place employer establishments in 2023 (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023), and other services, which includes salons and repair shops, led the county with 1,127. Those are sectors where daily card volume can support a holdback, and also where a slow month makes one hurt. The sector pages compare the alternatives for each. Read how a request moves before you decide.
Our approach to advances
- We compare loan options first and present an advance only when you ask, or when it plainly fits.
- We put the total to be remitted and the collection method in front of you before anything else.
- We will not describe an advance as a loan, because a merchant cash advance is not a loan.
Funders set the factor, the holdback and every other term.
