Inventory financing is business funding used to buy stock, secured mainly by that inventory and repaid as goods sell or on a schedule. Truevale Loans, a small-business funding broker in Reading, Pennsylvania, explains inventory loans, floor plan lines and the UCC filings behind them to Berks County retailers and wholesalers, and introduces requests to lending partners, which decide and set rates and terms.

How to finance inventory in five steps
- Size the order against sales history. Partners look at how quickly comparable stock sold before; so should you.
- Work out the sell-through date. When will enough of the order have sold to repay the financing?
- Choose the structure. A term inventory loan, a revolving inventory line, or a floor plan for high-value serial-numbered items.
- Read the collateral terms. Most partners file a UCC financing statement on the inventory and sometimes on other assets.
- Plan for slow sellers. Know what happens if part of the stock does not move: early repayment demands, markdowns or a longer schedule.
Stock that turns slowly or loses value quickly, such as fashion or perishables, is harder to finance on its own because it makes weaker collateral.
Retail inventory financing in Berks County, PA
Retail trade had 1,099 employer establishments in Berks County in 2023, more than any sector except other services, and 39.5 percent of them had fewer than five employees. Wholesale trade had another 383 (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Retail and wholesale businesses without employees are counted separately: 2,875 and 579 in 2024 (Nonemployer Statistics 2024).
A small store has little room to carry a large order on cash alone. That is where financing tied to the stock earns its keep, as long as the goods sell on time.
Floor plan financing meaning
Floor plan financing is a revolving credit line for individually identified, higher-value items: every unit gets financed on delivery and settled the moment that particular unit is sold. Partners usually audit the stock periodically to confirm that sold items have been paid off. It is common for vehicles, boats, trailers, large appliances and powered equipment. For general merchandise with many low-value items, an ordinary inventory loan or line is more typical.
Inventory financing vs factoring
They solve different problems. Inventory financing pays for goods you have not sold yet. Factoring sells invoices you have already issued to a factor, which advances part of their value and collects from your customer. A wholesaler that sells on 30- or 60-day terms might use both: inventory financing to buy, factoring or a line of credit to bridge the wait after the sale. Truevale Loans compares these structures; partners provide them.
Inventory financing versus a credit line or working capital
| Inventory financing | Line of credit | Working capital loan | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Security | The inventory | Varies; may be unsecured | Often unsecured with a guarantee |
| Fits | Large or seasonal stock buys | Frequent smaller restocks | A one-off gap, not tied to specific goods |
| Repaid | As stock sells, or on a calendar | On drawn balances | Fixed installments |
If restocking is constant and moderate, a business line of credit may be simpler than a dedicated inventory product.
What partners usually review for inventory
- Sales history by product line or category, ideally a year or more.
- Current stock on hand and how long it typically takes to sell.
- Supplier invoices or purchase orders for the goods being financed.
- The business's latest bank statements and tax returns.
- Any existing liens on inventory or on all business assets.
Partners lend against stock they believe will sell. Clean, current inventory records make that judgment easier and are worth building before the request, not during it.
Liens on your stock
A UCC financing statement filed with the Pennsylvania Department of State tells other creditors that a partner has a claim on the listed collateral. If a filing describes "all inventory" or "all assets", a second inventory lender may decline to stand behind it. Search your business's name first; the Pennsylvania UCC lien search guide shows how. More sector context is on the sector pages and our Reading, PA page.
